Spring is here and it is planting time again. I have already started some peas, snow peas and lettuces inside and soon will be moving them outside. Some will be going into pots and others will be going into my raised garden beds. But before they make their big move to the outdoors, I need to get their beds and pots ready for them.
Part of my prep for is to give them a good potting mix to grow in. One product that I will be trying this year is the new Expand ‘n Gro™ Concentrated Planting Mix from Miracle-Gro™.
There are several benefits and advantages about this planting mix that appeal to me.
*it is compressed. So the bags will take up less room in my car, which means more room for extra plants.
* it expands up to 3x when you add water so it will be less work to fill my pots. Less work means more time to spend with D and Willow enjoying the garden.
* the fertilizer is already in there and will feed my plants for up to 6 months, that is the whole growing season here in Michigan. I like that since I know I don't fertilizer as often as I should, this will do it for me.
*The coconut coir fibers in the planting mix hold more water. This is great because sometimes I don't water as often as I should. Since the planting mix holds more water, I have less chance of droopy veggies and floppy flowers.
*Using coir helps the environment. All-natural coir is a by-product of coconut processing and used to end up getting discarded. Now instead of the landfill, it will help my plants grow.
*The coir also keeps the planting mix light. Air is just as important to good growth as water. If the soil is too compact, plants don't do as well. Coir keeps the soil light and fluffy.
*Once the planting season is over, the planting mix will continue to help out my garden. I can just mix it into the soil to help make it a better place for flowers to grow. It will help the flowers I plant next year in my in-ground beds by loosening the soils and making it less compact. The coir fibers slowly break down adding nutrients to the soil. Coir is amazing stuff.
So I am going to head to my local garden store to get some Expand 'n Gro™. I have a bunch of pots to fill!
If you try this planting mix, let me know how your plants do. I plan on doing a follow up post at the end of the summer to let you all know how my garden turned out.
