Pinterest Tips: Fact or Fiction?

When I am killing time getting inspired on Pinterest, I always run across tips and tricks for this or that.  I ALWAYS wonder if they actually work.

So over the last couple of weekends, I decided to try some out.

1.  The perpetual green onion

The tip is to put your cut bunch of green onions in a glass after they are cut.  They regrow so you always have green onions for your recipes.

FACT!

I cut this bunch of onions last week and they are already starting to re-grow.

2.  Hot vinegar will soften paint brushes.

The tip is to submerge any hardened brush into a jar/glass of hot vinegar and let it soak over night. By morning, it will be soft again.

FACT!

I found this brush in our basement. It had been left by the previous owner and was hard as a rock. Now, you can see that it is soft and bendable.  It is like I found a free brush!

The key is to get the vinegar nice and hot.  I tried dunking a brush in room temp vinegar and it didn't work as well at all.

3.  Cleaning cooktop grates with ammonia

The tip is to seal your grate in a gallon ziplock bag with 1/4 cup ammonia, put the bags in a well ventilated are (in case there is a spill) and 12 hours later...bam! Clean grates.

FACT!

Even D noticed how clean the grates were.  Disclosure:  Because our grates were so gross*, we needed to do two treatments of ammonia.

Before:
 After:

*We had been living with these grates with horribly baked on stuff since we moved in because it was over $50 each to replace them with new.  We just couldn't justify spending the $250+ for new.  So I had used Simple Green, oven cleaner, Bar Keepers Friend, Brillo pads and more to try to get them clean and nothing worked...until now! (I sound like a infommercial sales person)

4. Denture cleaning tablets will clean the gunk from the inside of a glass vase/pitcher

I have this tall bottle green pitcher that has been boxed up because I haven't been able to get the inside clean. The neck is very narrow and I don't have scrubber brush that will fit.

After seeing the tip that denture tablets can make old dirty, dusty, grimy glass look like new, I thought I would give this a shot to clean out my pitcher.

Like the grates, it took 2 treatments of 5 tablets a treatment to get things sparkly and shiny, but since the tablets were the cheap store brands, that may have been a contributing factor.

FACT!

Before:

After:
I still can't believe how clean just the tablets for the vase.  Now it is on a shelf in the living room and not stored in a box.

So in this round of Pinterest Tips: Fact or Fiction - everything turned out to be fact. Stay tuned for more  posts in the future fact checking Pinterest/internet tips to see if they actually work.

Have you done any Pinterest Fact or Fiction experiments yourself?  I would love to hear about them!

  1. This is interesting. I've also wondered if when people boast that they have "the best" of whatever on Pinterest if it really was the best. Now I know that most of it is probably true! Thanks!
